- Arrive early — Popular fishing spots fill up quickly during free events. Consider going to a less well-known local pond or creek rather than the main lake.
- Bring basic gear — A simple rod, reel, hooks, and live bait (worms or minnows) are all you need to get started. Check our Fishing Gear Checklist for essentials.
- Know the rules — Free fishing days only waive the licence requirement. All catch limits, size restrictions, and area closures still apply. Download your province's fishing regulations summary before heading out.
- Consider buying a licence afterward — If you enjoy the experience, use our Cost Calculator to find the most affordable licence option. Many provinces offer short-term licences for as little as $10–$20.
- Bring the kids — Free fishing days are designed for families. Check our Fishing with Kids guide for age-appropriate tips and safety advice.

Why Provinces Offer Free Fishing Days
Provincial free fishing dates make it easier for people to try fishing without paying for a licence first. They are especially useful for family trips, beginner outings, and short test trips where you are still deciding whether a full licence is worth it.
The usual idea is simple: give people an easy first trip without asking them to buy a licence first. In practice, many provinces place these dates around Family Day, Father's Day, or early-summer weekends when travel and family fishing are already popular.
Tips for Free Fishing Days
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really fish without a licence in Canada?
Yes — during designated free fishing events! Most provinces offer free fishing days where residents (and sometimes visitors) can fish without purchasing a licence. You still must follow all other fishing regulations, including catch limits, size restrictions, and area closures.
Do all provinces publish free fishing dates at the same time?
No. Some provinces publish a full 2026 schedule early, while others leave the event page up without posting the exact dates until later. Use the finder as a planning tool, then make one last check before you go.
What rules still apply during free fishing days?
All regulations except the licence requirement still apply: daily catch limits, size restrictions, area closures, and species-specific rules. In Ontario, conservation licence catch limits apply during free events (lower than Sport limits). In Alberta, standard limits apply. You must carry valid government-issued identification and follow all posted signage. National parks are never included in free fishing events — you always need a Parks Canada fishing permit to fish in a national park, regardless of provincial free fishing days.
Can tourists fish for free during free fishing days?
It depends on the province. Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia post some 2026 events that include visitors. Ontario limits its family fishing periods to Canadian residents. British Columbia also applies freshwater and species-specific limits during its family fishing weekend.
