PEI Freshwater Season Starts April 15 in Most Places
PEI says the angling season for freshwater fish opens on April 15 each year in most locations. For 2026, the province also points anglers to the current Angling Summary for details by location and species.
Start here when the trip depends on PEI regulations, the Angling Summary, trout timing, season dates, or whether to buy before a spring trip. Open the PEI cost and online buying guide for price, WCF, courtesy licences, or printing proof.
Saltwater fish and shellfish questions do not use the same path. PEI points those anglers to federal DFO recreational fishery rules.
PEI Trout and Freshwater Season Path
For most trout, pond, river, and inland-water trips, start with the PEI Angling Resources and Information Centre, then open the 2026 Angling Summary before choosing a water.
Start With The PEI Trout Season Split
PEI trout planning often mixes the April opener, licence cost, family fishing dates, named-water notes, and saltwater rules. Start with this split before you buy or pick a water.
Start with the PEI province page when you still need the island-wide setup. Stay here once the question is the Angling Summary, April opener, named-water note, trout tag, free family date, family trout trip, freshwater-versus-saltwater split, or final checkout timing.
| Question or situation | Best for | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Angling Summary, trout season, April opener, or named freshwater note | April opener, Angling Summary, named water, or trout tag. | Check the current Angling Summary for the exact water, then use the season calendar for broader timing context. |
| Licence cost, WCF, courtesy licence, family five-day, or print-and-sign proof | WCF, courtesy licence, free family date, saltwater split, or portal step before checkout. | Move to the PEI cost and online buying guide. |
| Free Family Fishing Weekend, kids, courtesy licence, or family trout trip | How the season and family date fit the trip. | Open free fishing days, the free fishing finder, age requirements, or fishing with kids for the family rule. |
| Saltwater fish, shellfish, tidal/coastal water, or mixed inland and coastal trip | Freshwater-versus-saltwater separation. | Open the federal vs provincial permit path before buying. |
| Ready to buy after the freshwater waterbody, age path, and season are clear | The final season check before checkout. | Open the buy online path or the online buying guide. |
Licence, WCF, Courtesy Licence, and Proof
PEI lists the annual angling licence at $10 plus HST and says angling licences include the Wildlife Conservation Fund fee. The WCF amount changes the practical checkout number for many anglers.
Children under 16 do not need an angling licence. PEI also lists courtesy angling licences for ages 16 to 18 and 60+, with a lower WCF amount for seniors 65+.
If buying online, the province says the licence is emailed after purchase and must be printed and signed before fishing.
2026 PEI Notes to Check Before a Trout Trip
The 2026 PEI page and Angling Summary call out a few changes and reminders. Hyde Pond in Cornwall is open from September 16 to November 30, 2026 as part of the extended angling season.
A section of the West River in Bonshaw is closed to all angling around the fish counting fence area. The page also notes a West River dip-netting closure for smelts between Crosby's Pond and the footbridge at Green Road.
PEI also notes trout tagging work in the Winter River area. If you catch a tagged fish in the named area, keep the tag or take a photo and follow the number on the tag.
Free Family Fishing Weekend
PEI lists Free Family Fishing Weekend from May 15 to May 18, 2026. During that window, anglers can fish without an angling licence, but normal rules still apply.
This is useful for a beginner or family trout trip, but it is not a blanket permission for every place or method. Check the current summary for the water, species, access, and limits before going.
For national comparison, open the free fishing days guide. For PEI-specific licence cost, open the PEI cost guide.
Access and Saltwater Split
PEI reminds anglers that much of the island is privately owned. Ask permission before crossing private land, and use public access resources when planning a new location.
For mackerel, striped bass, shellfish, and other saltwater questions, follow the federal saltwater path. PEI freshwater angling and coastal recreational fishing are not one single licence question.
A clean trip plan is simple: check freshwater or saltwater, read the current summary for the exact water, buy or print the correct licence if needed, then carry the proof with you.
